The Day of Pentecost falls fifty (thus, “Pente”) days after the Feast of Firstfruits in the Jewish festivals, and thus, since Christ arose on the Feast of Firstfruits, the day comes fifty days following Easter. On that first Pentecost after Christ’s resurrection and ascension, he sent the Holy Spirit on his disciples, who united them to Christ as his spiritual body. He continues to do so for all who believe since that day. Celebrating this day helps us remember who the Holy Spirit is, what he does for believers, and in particular how he unites all believers to Christ’s body, his church.
